Hello first of all, new to the boating world,
I have a 98proline with a 115 merc very low hours lots of setting I done all of the recommended prcautions before getting her going.

I used the boat in lake water during the summer and the original prop barely had the paint wore off during the summer i no i ran through some shallow water but never hit anything I no of. the prop did have paint worn off and a small tear (1/2 ") in one fin so i hit something im sure. So I bought a new prop did not realize there was a thrust washer or at least that is what i think it was, i had to drive it out of the old prop but it did not fit the in the new prop so i used it as a spacer anyway (mistake)?.

The prop without this spacer hit the 2 bolts that hold what i am calling the exhaust bell. I did not find this out until the prop hit them and knocked a small peice out of each blade. I took out the boat with the washer behind the prop and the prop with the peices out of it, 8mph was it motor turning 5g and pushing water like crazy.
any input for troubleshooting appreciated.

thanks

Steve,

Welcome to iBoats...

Firstly I have altered your original post (in the quoted part) so it is a bit more readable. Let me know if I have altered the meaning any.

Ok... you removed a rubber hub prop and replaced it with a Flo-torque II prop, yes? If so, the new prop should have come with the correct thrust washer. That is, unless you bought a non-Merc prop, then all bets are off.

It would be helpful for you to post a photo of the parts you refer to... especially this 'exhaust bell' with 2 bolts holding it on...

Re: 1998 115 merc.

I guess on the hubs, really not sure what a flow torque hub is please explain or i will search for it. I will try and get som pictures tomorrow but the part im talking about goes between the prop and the foot and is held on by 2 bolts running 12 o'clock 6 o'clock not 9-3 . so it pulled up to close after running some about an hour which i thought i had it tourqed to 55# and it had clearence when i left. It is a detroit prop is that a problem or does it mean you have to do a little more homework, as it appears so.

is there a chance i damaged the motor down shaft or the short shaft I am looking for pics on how that is assembled, going to buy a manual but havent yet.
Thanks for any help.

Re: 1998 115 merc.

You need to get back to Detroit and get the right thrust washer for that engine.

Pictures would be great.

I suspect the part you are referring to with the 2 bolts is the 'bearing carrier', which is bolted into the 'gear housing'. The short shaft which the prop slides onto is called the 'propeller shaft'.

Hey chris i no it has been a while but i thought i would let you know i got the boat running about 3 months ago and it was the bearing retainer i destroyed , I also learned it was a hard part to remove without the right tools.

My problem was the wrong prop. and it slid back onto the retainer with the thrust washer it did not fit correctly.

Now i have another problem, boat runs great for a while then it loses power.
before it drops it is at 5250 on the rpm and 42 mph then it comes and goes as far as dropping power to 4000 rpm 30 mph, I can press the key to choke the motor and it picks up a littlte at the time close to the right rpm so it makes me beleive it is a fuel issue. Would you agree with this?
