Here it goes, Started out fine...boat cruised out at nice speed....slowed down and trolled for an hour or so...decide to move...boat stays at about 2500rpm.....will not go into hi speed......no alarm and alarm is working cause it has gone off on low oil before....decide its not going to ruin my day,and continue to troll.....catch a few stripers and then rev the engine in neutral gear in reverse and then neutral forward ....put back into gear and it sputters but then takes off like a bat out of hell?...this is not the first time its happened....i thought it was bad gas....changed the filters....still happening. . . any ideas?.....where should i start?....not the first time that after i rev in neutral reverse then forward and then put into gear that it works fine.?...

kevin,
You should check the actual circuits that make up the "System Check" engine monitor and go from there. It sounds like the motor is going into S.L.O.W. mode from your description.
You did not give us an actual model# so I assume it is a 60 degree looper. If so, here is the circuit testing procedures from the OEM service manual.
Circuit Verification page 1
page 2
page 3
Start here and let us know the results along with the model#

Re: 1998 175hp Evinrude, low speed, no alarm?

Kevin, I have the 150HP version of that motor. You also need to check the shift assist switch. It kills spark to 3 cylinders, but does not trigger an alarm. I suspect my switch sticks, but have not yet verified it. I have trouble with idle quality when shifting into neutral.

You will see the switch on the shifter cable linkage, on the starboard side, in the lower cowling.

thanks for your help!...i was also looking into the shift assist switch....when I look at my motor diagram on the evinrude parts site it looks different?.....I will investigate further and let you know what I find!.....p.s. a friend of mine mentioned my problem to a mechanic and he said I might have a bad tachometer...?....any ideas on how a bad tach might affect engines performance?....

Just wanted to give an update.....my problem was the shift assist switch.....so if you are having the problems I listed originally, jittery engine and not going into Hi speed, check this switch. Thanks for you help !
