1998 200 hp

Have been looking for a used boat and engine. I keep on seeing late 90's and 2000 Evinrudes on "good priced" packages. Most recently, I saw a 23' w/a that I liked with a 200 hp evinrude. I spoke to the owner/seller and he was aware of the ficht problems and told me that this 1998 200 hp Evinrude was carburated and not a ficht. I thought that all 1998 200 hp evinrudes were ficht?? Also, if it is a carburated engine is this a "good" engine?

I'm pretty sure the Ficht system came out in 1997, so 98 would only be 1 year after it first came out. I thought that from 98 on, Evinrude was injected but maybe they continued to make carbed Evinrude's in the early years, not sure. I think deffinetely by 99 all Evinrude's were injected. If it is carbed well then it is a good strong motor, I have 2000 200hp Johnson and it is a really good motor. Good luck.

1999 was the first year of the Evinrude "big block" FICHTs of 200 and 225hp. Prior to that, they were carbureted motors.

Good to know seahorse. What hp's did they have with Ficht in 97 and 98, 70-175 or just 150 and 175? Thanks.

So, it's possible that the 1998 200 hp is carburated. If that's the case does this engine have some of the same problems of the ficht? The ficht engines were blowing powerheads. Wouldn't they have the same powerheads as the ficht and therefore, some of the same problems? Previously, reading on this board, everybody talked negatively about the1998 era eveinrudes. Also, the commentary was that not only were the ficht egines problematic but that quality control was poor as well. Please comment. Aslo, if this isn't a ficht, what things do I need to look out for? What type of performance? What type of care? Thanks.
