I am working on a 1998 25 EL, serial 0G614644, that suffered a minor overheat and jammed a piston. The piston is a little scuffed but not bad at all. Very little aluminum in the cylinder. Anything there can be taken off the cylinder wall with a mild acid. The rings got jammed in their grooves. They have to be replaced.
When I look up parts on a Mercury sponsored parts list I find there are two item balloons for rings. The lower ring is balloon item number 24 and the upper ring is identified by balloon item 25. When you scroll down the parts list, item 24 is staring at you but item 25 isn't even listed as existing. Completely ignores the drawing balloon.
I ordered a set of item 24 and they fit fine but do not fit the upper ring groove. This tells me there are indeed two different rings on this piston.
How do I find out the part number I need to get and do you know of any dealers out there that may carry this NOS?
