Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts,

Total Newbie here.... Started up my '98 40 HP Merc\Force for the very first time. Started right up, had water spitting out of the two holes (idle relief ports?) on the upper middle leg. Had about 25 lbs @ idle water pressure on the gauge. Sweet!.... THEN- Ran for a couple minutes then water stopped spitting out and water pressure dropped to zero. Dropped LL inspected impeller seems OK (soft and intact no real obvious signs of wear). Checked for blockages could not find anything obvious - since I'm really not sure what I am looking for I couldn't really tell. It looked dry inside the impeller housing. Tried garden hose into the water intakes, didn't really see much water coming into the impeller housing. Maybe a little. Also dry as a bone in t'stat cavity(?).

I am kinda freaking out here any help would be greatly appreciated!:(:(

Fellow Enthusiasts,

I am almost embarassed to admit this, but I feel I must (Told you I was a newbie!!)
Because of how my potoon sits, I am unable to tilt the motor fully down. So, when I used a smallish garbage can full of water to test the motor, the water level was not high enough to submerge the REAR water inlet screen (under the trim tab) with just the side inlets covered, obviously there was not enough water to prime the pump. I got a huge garbage can and filled it up. With rear inlet submerged, water came flying out of the idle relief holes and water gauge pressure shot up accordingly. LESSON LEARNED... I wonder how much damage I did to the pump running it "dry"?? It only ran for 2 minutes max...

As long as the water pressure is OK, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
