We have a 1998 Regal 2100LSR with a 5.0 EFI (TBI). It ran great the first time we took it out this year. It surged once or twice when taking off getting a wakeboarder up, but we just chalked that up to the old fuel and first time out hiccups. Thought nothing of it.
The next time we took it out it ran across the lake perfectly fine and pulled some wakeboarders with zero issue. One of the times we tried to start with a boarder it died when we punched the throttle. We were able to get it restarted and ran great up to about 3000 rpms. Anything above that it would die but start right back up. We floated in a cove for a few hours and then tried to get a board up again. It was fine for a bit, but after about 20 mins it started surging again. Then after that bit of boarding the boat did the same thing with dying above 3000 rpms but start back up easy. We could plane and stay right at 3000 rpms if we throttled up slowly, but if we throttled up past that point the engine would just shut off.
I checked the fuel filter and it was filthy, orange, and separated; apparently the mechanic forgot to change it when winterizing last year.
Put in a new fuel filter that next week and two cans of seafoam. It ran across the lake great for 20 minutes again, then the whole thing with it dying started over again.
Changed the fuel filter while floating and again it worked great for 20 minutes and the issues began again. After getting home I poured the fuel filter into a jar and it was near perfectly clean with only maybe 1/2 tsp of water sitting in the bottom. Not near enough to mess up the filter (I believe). I topped it up with clean gasoline before every trip as well.
The fuel lines are black and look to be in excellent condition. One odd thing is when it died, I would have to turn the key to off and wait a few seconds before turning it back to on and cranking, or else I wouldn't get a beep and it wouldn't start. If I turned it from off then right back on it would crank but not start. If I turned it to off, waited a few seconds, then turned the key to on and started to crank the engine, then it would start right back up.
I'm leaning towards some sort of restriction or a bad fuel pump, but would love some input and make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree before throwing parts at it. Anybody have any other ideas?
