My 2000 Four Winns boat has a 5.7 Volvo/OCM motor with TBI.

The temp gauge on dash is showing nuclear meltdown.

1. The raw water impeller is brand new.
2. The tstat has been replaced with new 160F tstat.
3. IR temperature gun shows the tstat is working perfectly. The tstat housing shows 160F while the engine block is 155-165F.

The motor never goes into protection and the horn never honks.

A. Can anyone give me a simple explanation of the the difference of TEMPERATURE SENDOR and a TEMPERATURE SENSOR. And specifically, what does the temp sensor do?

One allows your gauge to work, one tells the ECM what the motor temp is

Sendor sends info to the gauge and the sensor sends info to the ECM, correct? and if the sensor sends hot temperatures to the ECM, the motor will go into protective shutdown, correct?

Reason for asking...I am showing nuclear meltdown on the gauge but I can check the block and thermostat housing with an IR gun and everything is perfectly close to the 160F tstat setpoint. Also the motor runs fine with no signs of overheating.

Do I focus my attention on the sendor? or the gauge?

Discovered my problem...I replaced the thermostat recently, to do that I had to remove the hoses and the tstat housing. When I reconnected one of the hoses I accidentally caught the wire to the sender in the hose clamp, causing a short and bad reading at the gauge. All seems to be fine now. Thanks for the help.
