1998 90hp Johnson no forward gear

I was out last weekend docked my boat to eat and 1 1/2 later left only to find out I had no forward gear I never heard or felt anything abnormal. When throttle forward motor is still in reverse. My question is could I be experiencing a throttle cable problem before I start to tear into the lower unit. It doesn't seemed to be engaging for some reason. Thanks in advance!

try and see if the shift rod linkage , that connects to the shift rod under the carbs is in place , maybe it has vibrated loose and therefor you can't change gear

Part # 81 (don't know your exact model but it should be the same part.
