1998 Force 120 timing

Can anyone advise me how to set the timing on a 1998 Force 120? I had the carbs rebuilt and now it seems to be backfiring. I was told I need to reset the timing but I do not know where to begin. Any help would be appreciated.
I also need to replace the voltage regulator. There is presently a five wire regulator with one wire not attached. Do I need a four wire for this motor? Does the voltage regulator have anything to do with the rpm and voltage guage not working? Help!!!
