Well it's official I have a cracked engine case on my 1998 Force 75 hp the crack runs around the front below the carb, the engine still starts / runs ok but it also leakes fuel
& oil into the water via the crack. Has anyone experienced this and if so what are my options ? I mean I figure I have 3 options: the imfamous JB cold weld, find a replacement case, or weld the case I have, of course the last option is replace it with a merc. Any suggestions or advice ?

If the area is not under a lot of stress, then the JB weld will work. Seen many successful engine block repairs done with it that lasted for years. Remove any paint and roughen up the area with some sandpaper. If it's possible, you can possibly prevent the crack from getting any bigger by drilling a hole at each end. You'd have to look at the crack closely and see where the crack is in relation to any internal components before doing drilling though. Regardless, I'd try the JB Weld without drilling first.

The front half of the crankcase carries the crankshaft bearings and absorbs all the load of piston forces. You can try JB but I think it will fail relatively soon because of flexing. If the engine still runs well, JB the crack and use the winter to find a new block. If you try welding it, be sure to get a very experienced welder with a great reputation.

Find a case. The JB will work, the welding will be better. The crack allows air in and it will eventually cause a lean condition and do worse damage.J

Re: 1998 force cracked engine case

Thanks guys for the responses, you know up here in Michigan the prime boating season is so short I am hesitant to try a quick fix only to find out in the spring it did,nt work and then be down for the summer, I think a new case is the best route to take along with a freshening up so if anybody has or knows of someone with a case for my 1998 75hp please let me know, and again thanks to all who took the time to respond. have amost excellent Day !!

Tack weld it to hold it together and to keep it from cracking more and seal the tiny cracks with jb weld.
