I have a 1996 Keywest 1720 sportsman with a 1998 115 SPL. Ran the boat offshore NC 21 miles in 5-7 foot seas (83deg sea water temp). rough day for sure (but plenty of fish :))

On the way inshore, an alarm started at the throttle. DID NOT want to shut off engine 20 miles from shore so just put up with the sound. I mix oil and gas in the tank (richer than not) and have a good pee-stream. Came home to flush engine and NO alarm.

Ran the boat 7 days later just in the waterway and alarm started again but stopped within 4 minutes. On the way back to the ramp...ALARM again but permanent this time (even if shut off and started again). Pee water is not hot and water in lower unit is warm but not hot.

I flushed the motor at home and no alarm. Motor seems to be running fine but just have the alarm problem.

ANY suggestions would be a lot of help.

Thanks!!!

what is the sound pattern of the alarm?

next time it happens , quickly pull the cover and try to touch the head..if you get burned in a split second, then it is hot enough to sound the alarm...and you have over heat issues for sure...

if you can hold your finger there for 2 seconds or more, it isnt hot enough to sound the alarm.

Bob, it makes the same noise as when you first turn your key to the "on" position. But instead of just one beep...its 3 beeps every 2 seconds. It starts slowly and softly but after about 10 seconds it is loud enough to hear over the engine.

my manual doesnt cover that motor...but it might be the low oil alarm....

is the oil reservoir wiring dissconnected?

other wise maybe someone who knows the alarm patterns better can chime in.

continous usually is over heat...but some V6's have fuel restriction alarms at high rpms that sound the same

did you check the heads when the alarm comes on???

there are a few tests you can do to check the heat sensors...but they are a pain to do( i just did some on my sensors)
