OK I have the book on the engine and I was following it step by step. I removed the bearing carrier thrust bearing and reverse gear. Held back the pinion gear nut and counterclockwise spun the nut off the bottom of the pinion gear. Removed the bearing housing cover from the drive shaft. I used a chisel holder and clamped it to the flat on the drive shaft and pryed the drive shaft out. But now im stuck I thought the pinion gear was supposed to fall out. The nut on the bottom of the pinion gear is sitting on top of the clutch dog. Why didn't the pinion gear drop off? And why didn't the retainer come off with the upper driveshaft. Did I miss a step how are you supposed to remove that retainer pin. And how do I get the lower driveshaft out now? I hope I didn't do any damage to the driveshaft because the pin and retainer stayed back and I have the upper driveshaft in my hand. Any help would be appreciated!!

You should be using the factory service manual for reference. All you did was remove the upper driveshaft from the lower driveshaft and the pinion gear is still "taper tight" onto the lower driveshaft. You will need a hooked slide hammer or someone who knows how to release the pinion by going into the gearcase housing. If you screw up, you may need a new housing, pinion, and lower shaft.

What am I attaching the slide hammer to. The roll pin is sitting in the hole and in the way. The book I have is the factory service...
