Hi guys, I know the 225 is a bigger motor but would the newer 225 burn just as much as the older 150? Someone told me that these are just as bad or even worse on fuel than the 150's, is this true? Can I get some feedback from you Johnson 225 guys and anyone who has some positive info please.

Thanks

are they both 90 degree motors or is one of them a 60 degree motor or a fuel injected or 4-stroke?? Generally speaking if you run the same speeds that you were with the 150 you should get close to the same fuel milage, but if you will run faster it will cost you some MPG. Also the 225 is about 75 pounds heavier, that will have a small effect also..rule of thumb for is 1 gallon of fuel consumption for every 10 HP at full throttle..I have found this to be pretty close for most every carbbed motor I have owned. so if this is true 150 at full throttle will burn 15 gallons per hour and the 225 will burn approx 22.5 gallons per hour, but you should go further in an hour because of increased speed, but you will most likely burn more fuel with the 225 than the 150 if you go the same distance, providing both motors are in good operating condition. I am assuming you are using the SAME BOAT also or you can just throw this all out the window. bigger boat + bigger motor = bigger gas bill.

That depends if the 225 is fuel injected, they get good mileage compared to the carbed models.

"Newer 225" isn't very descriptive.

If it a 90? carbed V-6 looper its a pig no matter what year. The FI engines are way better on fuel.

These are both carbbed and the 95 150 is 60 degree and I think the 225 is 90 degree. Same boat for both motors.

Just out of curiosity, are the 60-degree versions of the same HP rating better on gas? I.e.: I recently purchased a 1997 carbed 115 60-degree over a 115 90-degree that was just a few years older. Hoping the 60 gets better mpg?

the 60 degree OIS get slightly better MPG than the 90 degree motors or so I've heard..so you will do better to stay with the 150 if fuel usage is a big concern. As Faz mentioned pretty much all carbed motors drink up the fuel..but they are easier and cheaper to repair and cost less..there are many $1k plus parts on a fuel injected motor.. I have one now that is giving me a fit, looking at a possible new ECU for a cool $1k..little bugger is hard to trouble shoot about to have to take it to a dealer..I never have to take a carbed motor to a dealer..so in my opinion fuel consumption is not the only issue. overall maintenance cost has to be considered.

yes the 60 degree gets slightly better and should idle and generally run slightly better.

This is a waste of time. It's extremely unlikely this 225 will EVER run again.

Yea I agree..but I was just trying to answer the fuel mileage question just to give generally information..i read the other post and agree ..that motor went for a swim in salt water and is shot.

The Ficht motors had some problems..most people will just avoid them all together ..people like me for instance.....there are too many other motors out there...I am kinda starting to avoid OMC motors all together even though I cut my teeth on a rude 115 and know more about OMC than other brands..I am starting to like Mercs and Yammys..i have had a couple of both and they really did me good. but I do have a 4-stroke yammy that is giving me some problems..I guess they all need fixing so I will keep my tool box.
