1998 johnson trim gurgling

200 hp johnson ..
the trim works downwards.. but if i hit the up button it goes up maybe a hair or two and this gurgling sound starts and the trim does not go any further up.
The trim motor sounds like its trying to go.
i just bought this thing used. And does the motor have to be pulled to remove the trim unit?

have you checked the fluid level ?? there is also a manual release valve on the starboard side of the transom bracket its inside a hole you have to look in it to see it make sure it is tight also

Mike, It sounds (sic) like you are low on PTT fluid. Help the motor by hand to trim all the way up. lock it in place with the locking fitting. Now open the resvoir cap and let it sit for 10 minutes and the air will bubble out. Refill with ATF, install the cap and run it up an down a bit. You will likely need to do this a few times over the course of an hour. See if you can find the leak....
