I think my trim sender is bad. I disconnected the wire that runs up into the motor and grounded it. The gauge responded by moving from pegged up to pegged down. Would this indicate a bad sender? Also, I'm having trouble locating the sender for this motor. The serial number is OG740775.

Thanks in advance

That s/n comes up as a model:

7200413GD MARINER 1998 200EFI

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1679.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-824052R3

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/824052r3/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

In the parts listing, for the trim sender kit, see item 23 under SWIVEL BRACKET AND STEERING ARM.

What was the original problem before you disconnected the wire?

The trim fugue isn't working, it stays on the up position. I just bought the boat two weeks ago

The trim gauge wasn't working, it wouldn't budge off the up position. I just bought the boat two weeks ago.

Pegging completely is usually a grounding problem. You say you disconnected the wire running up into the engine and grounded it. Which wire did you ground, the one attached to the sender or the one the sender wire is connected to.

You can verify the sweep range of the sender unit (potentiometer) by rotating it through it's range and using your meter to see if there are any opens.

If you look at page 2D-12 in the Wiring Diagrams section of the service manual you will see wire Brown/White going to terminal "S" of the gauge. This is the one that connects to the sender unit.

I grounded the wire that the sender connects to( I believe the brown and white wire). The gauge slowly swung to the down position.

I also grounded the the ground wire on the sender with a jumper. Grounding the ground wire had no effect.

The brown/white wire is the one that accepts the signal from the sender to transfer it to the gauge. By grounding that wire, I think you are just providing a ground for the gauge, which is why the gauge moved to the down position. If you look again at page 2D-12 in the Wiring Diagrams you will see how all the black wires are connected and these are the grounds. Check to make sure you do not have a loose or disconnected/broken one. Let us know what you find. Verify this before you reconnect the sender.

Looks like the sender is bad. I replaced it today, and it works like a champ. I' pretty sure that if you ground that wire and the gauge moves it's an indication that the sender is bad. The gauge is already grounded in the dash.
