1998 Merc 40hp triple cyl. CDI or Stator problem??

Hi,
My brother in law keeps his boat at my place, he like never uses it. There is a chance that the engine cOver is from a different engine.... But here is the problem... It will only start up for a few seconds and die, it'll do this all day it seems!! I have noticed the 2 yellow wires that go to the CDI are burnt up at the connection close to the CDI.. And they are slightly browned at the connection by the Stator.

I'm wondering what I need to replace? I'm Thinking the CDI...
I hope you guys can help me out, I don't want to buy both but just need one. Also dOnt want to buy one then this guy sells the other if ya know what I mean!

Joe;

To eliminate the easy stuff first, have someone start it and see if you can keep it running by squeezing the bulb. If it continues to run, you will know that the fuel pump is bad and this is an easy re-build for you.

Wow yeah that would be much easier and cheaper!! Lol ill give her a try n get back to you! I was totally focused on the burnt up connections, I bet you are right!!

Lol well I did what ya said, and guess what! It works! Turns out there is a small leak where the gas line connects to the primer bulb! Pushed them together and it idles and revs fine! Guess she was sucking air!

Good for you Joe, it was you who was the smart one by asking questions before throwing money at it. If you post the s/n, we can send you the service manual and the parts list.

Hahaa right on!! The sn is 06673567.

Now I think I might need a water pump. There was water trickling out, now there is none.... Always something lol
