1998 Mercury bogs under load

I have a 1998 Mercury 225 EFI that bogs down severely under load. The boat (1998 Nitro 912) will not plane out. This problem began to develop just recently. When it first started I could have whoever was with me go towards the front deck and the boat would gradually climb out of the hole and run just fine once on-plane.

The motor idles fine. It just will not gain any power past 2000 - 2100 RPMs. I have confirmed that each cylinder is getting fire. I have replaced all of the spark plugs. I have checked the gas for water or trash (none found). I have also verified that the compression on each cylinder is good (approx. 100 lbs, each cylinder).

Any help would be most appreciated.

Also, I have read other articles that state testing "spark strength" for strong blue spark is important. I am not sure how to do this. The only spark tester that I have is an old pen-type device made by Champion, that when held to the plug wire will verify spark being present. I was curious as to how you correctly identify "spark strength".

Please excuse my ignorance.

Re: 1998 Mercury bogs under load

Hey jmvaughn,

It sounds to me that you have a restriction in the fuel line somewhere, or a leak in the primer bulb, or a clogged vent line.

All of these conditions will make the engine run terribly. :(

Also try this...

Have someone along with you, squeeze the primer bulb as you are trying to accelerate and see if this allows engine to run normal. (Primer bulb should remain hard once primed and engine running.)

If it runs normal while squeezing the bulb, replace the primer bulb.

Hope this helps. :D

Kenny

Re: 1998 Mercury bogs under load

I should have included this information with the first post and didn't. You will have to excuse this rookie mistake. I have had someone with me try the primer bulb trick and no luck. I also tried to "choke" the engine and see if the boat would pick up RPMs. Neither trick worked. Any other ideas. I am really lost on this one. I have the repair manual for this motor and nothing is mentioned for this problem. I do have a new fuel line and bulb which I am going to install shortly. Maybe, just maybe this will do the trick.

Hey jmvaughn,

Check the vent line on the fuel tank.

Make sure that it is not obstructed.

Also do a fuel pump check as outlined in the repair manual as pump may be faulty.

Kenny

Re: 1998 Mercury bogs under load

Hey KennyKenCan,

Long Island is a great place. Spent my honeymoon on Fire Island in August of 1998. I have a really good friend that lives on Long Island also.

As I was posting earlier, I was testing the fuel pressure. The fuel pump tested fine. I checked the vent line and didn't find any obstructions. I wonder if maybe it could be the EFI "computer" or ECU unit. I sure hope not.

I hate to keep being a pest, but I am slowly running out of ideas and I think I might have to break-down and do the unthinkable and take it to the much dreaded repair shop.

Going to try a few more things. If any other ideas pop to mind, let me know. I appreciate your help with this matter.

Hey jmvaughn,

Unfortunatly I have very little experiance with those EFI motors.

I hope for your sake that the control boxes are not your problem because I have heard that they can be very expensive.

What town did you go to on F.I.?

Davis Park? Ocean Bay Park? Atlantique?

I hope you weren't at the Pines or the Grove!

Kenny

Re: 1998 Mercury bogs under load

Update:

Went ahead and replaced the water fuel separator and problem was still there. So, I looked for a fuel filter and could not find one. The repair manual speaks of an inline filter but this boat does not have one or least not one that I can find.

I borrowed two known good ECU units (Fuel Injection and Ignition) from the local Mercury shop. Neither of these units helped with the bogging problem.

I have tested fuel pressure.

Fuel injectors appear to be clean and free of obstruction.

This boat has a vapor cannister for collecting unburnt fuel. Does anyone know how to test this units ability or could this not even be my problem. I just wonder if a bleed line problem going into the vapor cannister could be drowning the motor with excess buildup. The repair manual I have is sort of foggy on these details.

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful help everyone.

Hey jmvaughn,

I have had very little experience with those fuel-injected engines.

I think you need a guy like DHadley to answer your problems.

Sorry I couldn't help any further.

Kenny

Ever find out what was the cause of this issue? I seem to be experiencing the same thing on my 225 EFI.
