1998 or 1989?

Purchased a johnson outboard motor was told it was a 1989 but best I can tell it is a 1998 by the model number J40TECD. Couldn't find any pictures to help me out. Sorry if I already sent this once very new to this forum thing. Thanks Tim D.

Dang, I was thinking it was a 40hp, Tiller, Electric start, CD - 1986<br /><br />of course it could be 40hp Tilt trim electric start, EC - 1998, with a production run code of D.<br /><br />Either way, it is a1986 or a 1998, not an 89.<br /><br />Does the cover look like this 1986 <br /><br /><br />Or does it look more like this 98-2000
