First, let me say, I'm new to working on outboards and I don't have enough money to have it rebuilt by a pro, so I'm sorry if these questions seem silly, but that's how I ended up on this forum.

I'm rebuilding my 1998 Suzuki DT140, and the guy at the machine shop said the motor was definetly not getting enough oil. How can I check the oil pump ? And are there any other obvious culprits I should check ? Are there any parts that you would automatically replace when you have the motor apart ?

Thanks for any help!
Paul

Re: 1998 Suzuki 140hp Outboard DT140 oil problem

The manual gives a procedure for measuring the output of the oil pump but the engine has to be running on premix to do it. The oil injection system has the tank which should be cleaned, the filter/flow sensor (depending on year with the flow sensor) which should be replaced, the pump itself which is variably activated by the throttle and should be synchronized as per the above procedure, and the oil lines and check valves which should be replaced when cracked or clogged. If all of these are working you got oil.
