I recently had the boat in the shop to get it checked out and my mechanic let me know that the fuel pump was on its way out, he said it was only giving out about 3 PSI at idle. He wanted $650 to replace it, but that seemed high to me. I got to looking online and found the entire pump for $380 so I was going to just replace it myself. But, does anyone know if there is a rebuild kit out there that is a little cheaper? Last time I had it out the engine died a couple of times while idling, so it looks like its about time to work on it.

Also, I was hoping to use it this weekend and will not have time to the pump and wanted to know if I could damage the engine running it with a bad fuel pump? I did not know if it would be running too lean with the bad pump.

Thanks for the help,

Mitchell

Three lbs at idle is in specs.

Try mastertechmarine.com for a rebuild kit. It's for the fuel side only. If you're still using the oiling side you'll need a new pump.

There are kits available.
Go to: shop.evinrude.com
View parts catalog
Select 'Accessories' from the drop down.

Fuel Pump Repair Kits

Then just to order what you need. Some rebuilds the pumps (I used to), some never manage to do it properly and ends up buying a new pump. Fuel and air-pump sections are not a big problem, but check out the housing and seals as well. If any fuel/oil in the air motor - change the housing!!

Sounds like I am going to go ahead and replace the entire unit.

Will I damage my engine with a weak fuel pump?

Too little fuel, your engine runs lean and the pistons starts 'burning' and melting! Run it hard at wot for a minute and remove the spark plugs. If 'whitish' you are lean and in danger zone, if light brownish, you are ok.
