I have recently purchased the above mentioned outboard and was ensured that it was running perfectly on the previus boat.I have a 17ft bowrider with an inboard tank. The engine will run fine for a while but sometimes when you try and open the throttle it will not go above 2000rpm.If you open the throttle further it cuts out completely. After a while it comes right(varies from 10 seconds to 10 minutes).
It seems to happen mostly after it has been run hard and then rests for a while.
I have checked the entire fuel line, fuel pump, primer bulb and even tried an alternate fuel tank and line but it still occurs.
I have also had the carbs cleaned.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?
I have been told it could be a faulty stator?

So you are sure the fuel system is fine? Because my guess would have been the vent to the tank is closed, damaged fuel pump, or gummy carbs. How do your spark plugs look?

But given that the fuel system is fine, have you tested for spark on all cylinders? Check this first!!

Is the engine overheating or low in oil, I think 2000 RPM is the limiting RPM for when the engine goes into "safety mode". Could a faulty warning module.

-andy
