I just got a boat & motor for ZIP as a project .
the engine runs but the piston for steering seems frozen. Can I whack the end of piston to free it or should I soak it with Blaster or remove steering cable . It seems that the cable is free, could it be locked somehow is there a way to relive pressure? as I said this is a project I'm just looking for some Homegrown INFO B4 I tear it apart.
thanks LINK

Piston? If you have hydraulic steering you will have two hoses not one cable...

If the steering is cable type, there is a mechanical connection via cable from the wheel to the engine. The "piston" that goes through the top engine pivot is really a stainless sleeve that the cable end is swaged to and if the wheel turns freely with the engine not moving, take the whole show off and get a new steering cable…

I popped the nut's off the ends the steering wheel moves and also the cable , I saw it pulling from inside the housing that you put it through, It's that shaft ( tilt tube)housing that seems to be binding up at the steering link rod, it's that rod that you connect the steering link rod to thats frozen. maybe i'll have to get a new tilt tube housing?
this engine and boat was a gift to my son (19) me being the Dad of course it's my baby @ 19 I wasn't thinking about boatsd:) so it's our inshore flats Tracker Tagra17 , 1999 it will be a great winter project, after I stop fishing on my Trophy 2052 W/A and yes its fishing like crazy up here on Buzzards Bay, Ma.
opps ,I'm rambling

Don't whack it as you also whack the helm and the gears in it. The cable is stuck in the tilt tube. Disconnect the link and apply liberal amounts of PB BLaster or any of the other rust buster types of products. Jack up the boat on one side so the lub tends to seep into the tilt tube. Turn the wheel gently. Any movement, regardless how slight is a sign of progress. Repeat the process until the cable frees up. Then remove it and use a brass gun cleaning brush to clean out the inside of the tilt tube. Lub it up and reinstall the cable.

Thanks, replys are great! I removed the outer nut's and the steering cable is free , the problem is that shaft that connects to the steering link rod is frozen thats why I wacked it had a brass punch and soft blow hammer it only moved a 1/8 inch I have sprayed it down with Blaster .
The nuts that are up against the tilt tube should they be tight against the housing? I know I'm asking alot , I don't have the manual yet just got the boat 2 days ago.
I have all winter this is a project that will take awhile.
Next I have to make a template of the transom and attach a 1/8" aluminium sheet and also inside than through bolt with stainless bolts , the transom has had some galvanic corosion .It's a Tracker 17' this seems like the easiest solution to the problem instead of replaceing the complete transom ,the wood core is solid.
the boat will be used for flats and river Striped Bass fishing only CALM waters it's a solid boat that will go places my other boat can't go
am I rambling8)

Update: the steering is free can you say "BLASTER" that stuff is the BA!!$. next gonna clean the tilt tube housing , probally run some oooo bronze wool through it
and make sure all the grease fittings work.
I'm going to pull the engine off and do a impeller it was
streaming water but not strong @ low RPM'S after all it sat for 2 years .
Patch the transom and I'll be good to go8)8)
