My port 200 hp Mercury EFI's Ignition is beeping steadily at planning RPMs. It doesen't beep in neutral (even when revved up to 3500 rpms) or in idle gear. The engine is a 1999 and has just started doing this. I took it into a local shop after I began hearing the noise and they replaced the water pump and the thermostat on the engine at my request, which might have been a waste of money.. The motor is running strong and is using oil and is pissing water. It is not sluggish and starts right up. The beeping is coming from an alarm that is connected to the iginition switch and not the motor istelf. Any ideas??? I was going to run offshore this Saturday but am now a little afraid. The shop said the motor ran strong and everything checked out alright. I think they thought the beep was my electronics. They did river test the boat as well. Is there a short in the alarm??? Do they go bad??? I am not sure what the next step is. I know the alarm is there for a reason but I am stummped. Any help is much appreciated!!!
CMB

I have read the other posts on the same subject but still need help. The oil resevoir under the cowling is full and both of my tachometers work fine. Any ideas????? I will check the water filter and see about that possibility. My starboard motor is running fine with no beep in its ignition. Also, both engines are fed from the same tank of gas.

On EFI motors the alarm sounds for 4 reasons, Overheat, low oil, over rev, & water in the fuel. Check the fuel filter on the engine for water. Is it a steady beeb or a series of beeps, the owners manual will tell you what each means. Good Luck, Joe

Are there any lights on on the dash. These go along w/ the warning alarms, One may look like an oil can, another will look like a gas pump. Go to the Library & get a service book, should tell you what the alarms mean & how to check them out. May also be the oil sensor in the tank on the engine, this has to be refilled manually if it ever runs low, then the outside tank will keep it up, the tank on the engine, remember, almost full is not good enough, & make sure all caps are tight, & again ckeck the fuel filter/ water seperator on the engine. With dual engines you have a great diagonistic tool in that you can switch parts back & forth to see what makes the problem go away, or show up on the other engine. Good luck again, Joe

You can find what you need here for the manuals. I am not familiar with the EFI, but like the above post says, check the fuel/water seperator for water, if it still sounds, take the cap off the oil tank on the motor(under cowling)and turn it upside down to make sure the pick up is working, if it stops the beeping, you will need a new cap, the sender is not working.Don't over tighten the cap, they have a tendancy to break at the top of the threads. I am on my 3rd one right now. Worse case will be oil pump on the engine. Is it using oil from the tanks? I think we are all on the same page on where to look.

http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/factory_manuals/
