I have a 1999 18 foot pontoon with this engine on it. It has run great I do all the work on it with a solec manual. Yesterday going up a river at about 3000 and 45000 rpm we slowed to idle to watch a bobcat. Then turned the engine off. 3 minutes later started it back up and idled for about a minute and the engine stopped running. It would not restart. After about an hour of trying to restart it I thought the plugs would be fouled. I pulled one and that plug was dry and brown, perfect. So I messed with the gas line it was connected another guy helping us may have pumped the ball. It started right up. We got the hell out there and back to the boat ramp and it quit again when I was idleing again. Hard to start but with the throttle up it started. Do I need to rebuilt the carb and fuel pump? What do you guys think? Thanks in advance. Book just talks about surging at high speed mine does not do this.

I'd work from the fuel source backwards.
bad gas? try a prtable tank.
fuel line restriction?
bad primer bulb?
after u rule the simple stuff out, then go to
carbs and pump.
a stuck float can cause this and sometime a couple
taps on the side of fill bowl with but of a
screwdriver can unstick it. a little crud in the
needle seat.
good luck,
M.Y.

Fuel is less than two weeks old. Then I put about another 7 gallons in it before we left. About a month ago I took the tank off and totally cleaned inside and out. Let it dry for a day and have put a least 30 hours on it since. It has a new pump ball and gasline and connections. But I will go back over that stuff again. I really can't trouble shoot it again until it does it again. That is sometimes painful!! Up **** creek without a paddle!! Thanks

have seen many defective "new" pump balls.
if you pump it a few times and it starts right
up, u may want to try another one.

if the plugs are dry and brown as you say, it could be that you're running a tad too lean, if that's the case then a slight carb adjustment would probably be in order.

It has been pretty cold down there lately and that can really effect this engine.By all means try an alternative fuel source that you know works, but you may just need to adjust your idle mixtures to accomodate the barometric pressure.

I went over it again and did not find any leaks. But then again it is just sucking fuel and it probably would not leak. I did check the screws on the fuel pump that is on the side of the WMC carb. and they were pretty loose. I tighten up but have not been back out to test. With the recent cold here in dallas the lake temp was down to about 48 so that might play a factory also. How long do you get out of one of these carbs before it has to be rebuilt. I bought the full Mercury Kit just to have onhand. This spring I will probably do the water pump, carb, plugs, wires and thermastat. Thanks again.
