I'm getting ready to replace the water impellars on both of my OB's. I have a 1999 25 and 9.9 hp 2-stroke mercury. I have the OEM manuals and feel confident in doing this but was curious if there were any "tricks-of-the-trade" that I should be aware of before starting to tear them down? Thank you.

A few observations. Go to boats.net for the drawings for your motor.
Be sure that you have removed "All" the bolts or nuts and disconnected the shift rod.
If the unit wont move chances are that you have have missed a nut/bolt.
Mount the lower in a vice with soft jaws or plywood to protect the paint. Ok to clamp on the Skeg.
Removing the impeller be sure you don't drop the key. Pry the impeller up slowly and catch the key.
Use a little waterproof grease to hold the key in place to fit the new impeller.
Use a little grease to lub the inside of the housing and the seals. Replace the seals if necessary.
When pressing the housing down over the new impeller be sure to rotate the drive shaft in a "clockwise" direction. A leather glove comes in handy for this.
I use OMC thread sealant on the pump housing bolts and the casing bolts to keep them from seizing in the aluminum castings.
Apply waterproof grease to the splines on the drive shaft, not on the top of it.
Put it back together.
Pull the spark plugs to make it easier to rotate the flywheel by hand to align the crank shaft splines with the drive shaft.

Thanks for the info. Why is it necessary to rotate the drive shaft while pressing down on the impeller housing?

So that the vanes are seated in the right direction. Plus it is the easest way to get the housing down to the seated postition. (clockwise)
