I know it's difficult sometimes to piece together various components to repower an existing boat but that's where I'm presently at. My question is I have a 1999 Volvo GS 3.0 and I'm trying to install in a 1994 Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II. The flywheel from the Volvo is 14" with no holes for the triangular coupler which I have from the original 3.0 Merc engine. I also have the starter from the Merc. Can I purchase a flywheel 12 7/8" with 3 5/8" hole centers (where attaches to crank) and install my coupler and starter? I think this should work but I would like to know before hand. Thanks,

Ayuh,... Why do you wanta go to the small flywheel,..??

Your Merc flywheel, 'n coupler should fit the other motor...

Well, it's kinda like I discarded my Merc 94 model flywheel and believe it or not mounted that coupler onto a 1983 OMC 2.5L flywheel (12 7/8"). Now I have a 1999 model Volvo GS 3.0 and it's flywheel does not have the holes for the Merc coupler. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the replies Bondo/Bubba1235. I kind of thought the same thing but I didn't know if I need a 12 7/8 or 14" for my starter to work. Maybe from what I have read on starter applications the same starter is used on both size flywheels and since my flywheel housing is 1994 model it's big enough for the 14" flywheel?????

Nope,... That's Not so...

The starters with the straight accross bolt pattern fit the 12" flywheels, 'n the Staggered bolt patterned starters fit the 14" flywheels...
So,...
It depends entirely on which starter bolt pattern the Block is drilled, 'n tapped for...
Some blocks are drilled for 1 or the other, 'n some are drilled for Both...

Bondo I stated that my 14" flywheel hole diameter was 3 5/8 but it's actually 3". The 12 7/8" (older) flywheel has the 3 5/8" hole dia. My starter has the straight across bolt pattern, one long and one short mtg bolts, and when I mount it there is no way the 14" flywheel will fit. I guess I need a 12 7/8 flywheel with the 3" hole dia. if there is such a thing???

Ayuh,... This is the ship ya get into, cobbing junk together....

You said the Volvo has a 14" flywheel....
That block will have/ need the staggered pattern starter...
It's also the late model, 3" flange pattern...

You can't put a 12" flywheel, with the old larger flange pattern on it...
Unless the block is drilled for the straight across bolt pattern, you can't put a 12" flywheel on it...
I've also never seen a 12" flywheel with the holes drilled for the triangler coupler...

At this point,...
I'm totally confused as to just What you've got.......

Bondo, believe it or not I did bolt the triangular coupler (1994 Merc) to the 1983 OMC 12 flywheel. Now I'm trying to install my starter (which was mounted on the OMC) and coupler to the 1999 Volvo 3.0. Sorry for the confusion....

So does the Volvo block have the straight across bolt pattern drilled for the starter,..??

If so,... You need a late model 12" flywheel...(3" bolt circle)
If Not,... Yer screwed, 'n need a New Plan...

Yes, I can bolt my straight across starter to the Volvo block but not with the 14" flywheel in place. It looks like all I need is what you're saying- a 12" flywheel with 3" bolt dia. Is there such a thing?? Or do I need to try to find a Volvo starter and try a 14" Merc flywheel?
