I just changed the impeller on my 1999 4. hp Mercury. Now it will not go into gear. Anyone know what I did wrong or missed?

Re: 1999 4. hp will not go into gear

okay i got both of them in reverse. Now that i have the lower unit back out i can not get it to go in all the way. The manual tells me to turn the flywheel some to get it to go in. This job will just not stop i have change Impellers before but this one just is giving me a bad time. Any advice on getting the lower unit back up?

Re: 1999 4. hp will not go into gear

Okay so what i ended up doing is the one thing i was trying to avoid. TAKING EVERYTHING APART. I broke it all down piece by piece and finally after about an hour or so i got it all back together working fine. tomorrow i will start it up and make sure it is as good as i think it is. Started the day with and Impeller check ended the day with a complete brake down. The good thing is everything looked great!

Thanks for looking and if you run into the same prob maybe I can help :)

Taylorsville;

Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday but I was busy with my wife who is in a hospital, 350 miles away.

You seemed to have removed a post. After I sent you the information you posted that you had it back together but could not get access to the clamp to lock the shift shafts together.
My reponse was going to be that you must drop the LU and again, make sure that you have it in Reverse by checking the rotation of the prop. The reason that both units must be in Reverse is so that you will be able to gain access through the inspection plug, when you install the LU.

Other than the shift shaft, driveshaft and water tube, there are not many problems to run into.

However, as you do not say what the problem was eventually, I can only imagine that it was an issue of RTFB.

Here is the link to the full manual:

Hope your wife is doing okay.. She is much more of a priority then my post. I was just having a backwards day i was thinking i had it in reverse but it was in forward the whole time. I have changed impellers before so I went into this one thinking I knew it all . It showed me!!!! Well I got it all together now and it it running fine. Like I said earlier now I know everything is fine because I took it all apart a saw what shape she was in. Thanks for the manual link, It will help in the future.

Thanks,
Taylor

Taylor;

Excellent, as long as you got it going in the end, the sooner you are on the water.

Good Luck!
