I cleaned out my dads garage today and brought 2 motors home. 1 is an 8HP which I think is a 1999. The model is J8RXEEM and the serial # is G04619919. There is a 5 foot wire with 2 connectors (possibly for a battery connection) coming right out of the front of the motor (next to the choke lever). The motor does not have electric start. Any clue what this is for? Also, the cover won't latch down in the back (it has a pretty flimsy looking latch) and I have not been able to find which part might need replacing.

The other motor is a 15HP Johnson Sea Horse. The metal plate is missing so I don't have a model number or a serial number. From what I can tell, the 15HP were made between 74 and 79. Is there any other identification somewhere on the motor? This one is going to need quite a bit of work. Thanks for your help. I'm new to the forum.

J8RXEEM

Yes, EE are the date letters for '99

X = Extra long shaft (25")

The cable is the connection for charging a battery. The engine is fitted with a charging coil and rectifier. Insulate the connections if you run it not connected so that they do not short together. If you connect it to a battery be absolutely sure to connect it with the polarity correct or you will blow the blow the rectifier in an instant (also do not disconnect while it is running)
I think the engine is the sail version, intended as for a small sail boat hence the 25" shaft and the coil and rectifier. If so it will have an 9? x 6? high thrust prop instead of the standard 8? x 9.

You should be able to identify the cover catch parts you need from the parts lists at SHOP.EVINRUDE.COM

15 hp models have been made for much longer than '74 to 79, right up to at least 2005 and at various times before 1974 too.

The model number should also be stamped on a core plug (a disc about 3/4" diameter) somewhere on the power head.

Thanks Vic S. This was extremely helpful. The 8 has the long shaft as well.
