Replaced the alternator last Saturday, hooked up the water via the muffs to test it out, and it fired right up and ran for a good 15 minutes. Turned it off, waited a few minutes, cranked it right back up. Sunday took it to the river, backed the boat down the landing and the engine cranks but won't turn over AND the tilt/trim won't work. Can hear the trim motor, but nothing happens. Are the two issues related? I notice a post from 2012 that had the same problem with the same boat, but I don't see where the problem got solved. HELP please!!

That's two issues, lets start with the motor. First thing that comes to mind is the boat kill switch, is it off?
What motor and what drive are you working on?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... Do ya mean the motor, I'm guessin' a 3.0l, cranks over on the starter, but don't start, Right,..??
Or is the motor not turnin' over at all on the starter,..??

Is there oil in the trim pump's oil tank,..??

Bondo, motor cranks over the starter, but won't stay running. The second problem is the trim/tilt (unless they are related) and there is oil in the pump tank.

Ayuh,.... With the key in the "On" position,.... is the power at the coil's (+) terminal,..??

My WAGuess on the trim pump is,.....
The motor's shaft broke off, right where is goes into the pump,....

Pull the lines off, 'n test it into a rag,..... Does oil shoot out,..??
If not, pull it out, 'n remove the motor from the pump,...

Bondo, yes there is power at the coils. If we start the boat with the throttle wide open, it will run. But when we throttle down to idle, it shuts off.

Yes, we are going to rebuild the carb. BUT, what do you all think about why the trim/tilt doesn't work? Pump?

The pump runs but does nothing, its either as Bondo said the motor shaft broke in post 6, the check valves in the pump are stuck open, or your rams are froze up. So I would take Bondo's suggestion and pull a line loose and see if you have hydraulic fluid spray out when it is turned on

AllDodge and Bondo...thanks so much for the information. I haven't been able to look at it in the past 2 days, but will again tomorrow. I will post and update on the situation.
