1999 Evinrude 225 Ficht Flywheel Replacement

I have to replace the flywheel on my motor. I know I need a puller to take the old one off, but is there anything special I need to put the new one on?

Also, any comon reasons why a starter would chew 5 teeth off a flywheel? When I bought it used the guy told me of a few teeth missing but the motor still started fine. I have run the boat for more than a year and it finally chewed through enough teeth to ruin the original flywheel.

...you need to check the timing on ignition after the replacement by using a timing light unit!

Hi,
Had a the same problem on my 2000 200 HP. You need to replace your starter and/or service the bendix. If it sticks it will chew up the flywheel. Putting the new flywheel on is easy. There's a key on the shaft so the new one should line up correctly. You probably won't need to change the timing, but it's a good idea to check it, so you'll need the software, a serial cable, and a timing light. There's good instructions with the software. It's very simple to do. BTW, you don't actually set the timing per-se like in a car. With the Ficht, you run the software and it tells you what the "target" timing angle is, then you check it on the flywheel and enter what it actually is from the flywheel into the software. The software then changes it in your engine computer to match.

The whole process took me only about 4 hours - 1 hour to do the flywheel, starter and timing and 3 hours to find my buddies socket that I borrowed that I dropped in the water in my slip

When you replace the flywheel you may also want to check the gear on the starter bendix.
