I have a 1999 70 hp 4 stroke that cranks but will not fire. The engine light is giving code 14 witch indicates temp sensor. The manuel is giving the resistance values for the temp sensor but on an ohm's meter we are getting an OL reading. This should indicate the temp sensor is reading as overheated thereby preventing it from firing. However we had 2 other sensor's on hand so we checked them also and it gave the same OL value.

The mechanic I was working with is not certified thefore does not have the computer. Tomorrow or monday I am going to have diagnostics run to see if we can pinpoint the problem but my question is...It seems like really long odd's that we would have three bad temp sensor's or did we misread what our reading should have been?

This blows BIG TIME! I had 5 guy's supposed to be at my place at 6 am for a fishing trip we have been planning for week's. I have owned the boat for three years and she has ALWAYS without fail started! Since we are driving 4 hours to go fishing I decided to just make sure it would start....GRRRRRRR!

Is it possible that you have the ohm range set to high?

O/L on the meter means infinite resistance, or open.
Does the sensor not measure decreased resistance as the motor heats up, or is it close on overheat like my '89 70?

Motor will not fire, the reason we looked at temp sensor is that is the flash code it indicates.

In therory it should still fire in SLOW, but in the meantime the OL baffled us...It should be in the 5-8 Kohm's resistance

Never did get to the bottom of the resistance test. However I am adding this update since I think so highly of this site as a referance in case anyone else ever expirences the same issue.

The temp sensor was bad and is on order. However the no fire was due to fouled plugs due to being to rich because the faulty sensor.

We were so intent on the technical we over looked the simple in the process.

So the short answer was it still should have fired but the fuel mix was to much to spark.
