looking at a boat with a pair of these.

i did the search thing and read through the comments. some educational posts, but as usual i mostly read stay away, with no substance.

if i do venture out and get this boat, what steps should i take to minimize risk?

i read about the updates and such. if i can get the model and serial numbers off the engines, can a service technician tell me history of the engine? if i get the engines checked out by a mechanic, can they hook it up to a computer and tell me more?

if everything checks out (all updates performed, no error codes, etc) what are the bad things that could still happen (at least particular to these engines)?

thanks-

check the modle numbers there were many changes to the 99's the last suffix group are pretty much the same as 2000&2001 modles these seem to be reliable engines. but like has been said before moters require proper servicing to be reliable

HI
A "proper" service place can indeed tell you a lot about the previous use on those motors, I have a pair of 115's and they have done a lot of hours with very little problems, the service technician can connect a laptop computer the the motors and they can tell heaps of good stuff, maybe even some stuff you may not want to know, I am sure that the onboard computer could be reprogrammed to read something different but I doubt if any dealer would do this, last time mine where in for service the technician could tell me what hours, what revs they were run at and a whole host of stuff, just use the OMC oil I think it is HP50 and you will have years of service from a Ficht engine.

marinemech1- are you sure about that? so there is a chance these engines are similar to the 2000 and 2001 models? how would i tell this from the model number?

luna- always ;)

the last letter of modle number is the suffix code
see what your modle numbers are i'am assuming these are v-6 motors?
