I own a 200 hp 1999 Evinrude Fitch and I'm having an issue with it starting. When I first crank it up, all is well. However, I then have a problem getting it to start after I make a run and fish for a while. It turns over but will not start. Sometimes I can let it sit for several minutes and it will start but other times no. I just had the engine serviced and the cranking battery is new. My mechanic is puzzled because it doesn't happen all the time. I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Have you checked the 02 censer? Water in the fuel due to Ethanol?

Have you checked the trouble codes? This problem can occur with clogged water passage in EMM causing it to overheat and shut down, defective rectifier/regulator, stator problem, crank position sensor or a bad PDP (power panel) and they had problems with the PDP in this year range... also engine does not have a O2 sensor.

There is no O2 sensor on a FICHT.

Check the voltage at the starter connection while cranking the motor over. It should be about 10 volts if everything is in good shape. If it is even 4 tenths of a volt lower, the engine computer may not boot up to start the motor.

Re: 1999 Evinrude Fitch Starting Issues

Thanks for all the input. We have narrowed the problem. When the motor will not start, there is only one cylinder firing. My tech picked it up at a marina and it started fiine (after stranding me there on Sat.), drove it back to his marina, shut it off and it started fine 5 or 6 times. Thinking we my have solved the problem, I asked him to bring it over to me later that afternoon and it would not start. That is when he diagosed the problem as only one cylinder firing. Any suggestions?
