Please help I removed my lower unit and replaced water pump and my son turned the shaft on the lower unit were the shift rod linkage hooks to and I don't know we're to turn the rod all the way right or left with the controls in neutral ? That way when I bolt the lower unit on don't want the control in boat to be in neutral and the lower unit be in wrong position and it be in forward or reverse or break something? Please help, also I can turn that shift rod all the way right or left and then when I turn the prop by hand it will click noise with the prop turning forward and engage with turning backwards or reverse and either way I turn that shift shaft it does the same thing clicks turning prop forward is that right also? Thanks

Re: 1999 force 90hp gear linkage help!

Turn the conector to the left.
Then put the motor in forward.
Install the prop, reach down(from rear) and pull up on the right side of the prop.
If it clicks then it's in reverse. If it moves the drivesahft. Then it's in F.
If it clicks then it's in R
Install the drive while still in gear.It helps to leave in gear, that way if the splines aren't lined up you can pull on the right side again (still in gear) and it will turn the shaft.J

Re: 1999 force 90hp gear linkage help!

With the lower unit removed I rotated the shift shaft on the lower unit side counter clockwise till it stop then placed shifter in all the way forward drive full throttle ,then installed the lower unit and bolted all back up.with my plugs out so I can turn motor by hand easy I can put shifter in forward gear and turn motor clockwise and the prop rotates counter clockwise I can put shifter in neutral and it still rotates counter clockwise and I can put it in reverse gear and it still rotates counter clockwise!i purchased boat used and it had two bolts holding lower unit on and rest of bolts were in boat they said they tried putting water pump on and stopped well I pulled it down when. First got it and water pump key way was missing I got all that back right , and I always when I get a boat that has sat a while I boil the carbs and rebuild them I like them to start and no problems ,also new plugs I also will put marvel mystery oil in each cylinder and and rotate by hand a couple turns and leave it in for a few days while I rebuild the carbs and change the lower oil and clean out gas tank.anyway i noticed the prop had hit something because it has a bent blade and I have heard that they will shear off the clutch dog pin is that true what does anybody think , I have never been in one of these lower units that far but like I said I was a mechanic for over 20 years and before I got out drive ability was what I did for the last few years but I have rebuilt afew standard transmissions over the years,I purchased a year of seloc marine manual for the motor but it doesn't show any pics on how the shift shaft is hooked to the lower unit inside the case anything I need to be careful of pulling case apart ?i thank everyone for the help maybe I can help someone else on something one day.thanks

Turning the shift shaft to the left and pulling up on the prop should turn the driveshaft.
That will be in forward.J

In forward gear, turning the motor clockwise the prop should turn clockwise.

Take the lower unit off,put in a stand or block it up.
Pliers or vicegrips on the shift shaft.
Try spinning the prop and turning the shift shaft.
There should be 3 definate spots. To the left=F center =N right=R It should turn the driveshaft in F/R
See if it does that.

(have heard that they will shear off the clutch dog pin)
Hitting something, usually the prop suffers first then the hub in the prop.
The pin in the dog??? Never saw a broken one.Really no pressure on the pin.
Gears, yes and clutch dog wore down but never from a hit.

It's possible someone destroyed the lower.Drain the oil and and see if there is anything in the oil, water metal chunks, shavings?
If you can't figure out anything then take it apart or take it to the shop and ask the guy to see if it's shifting right???
Or bring it by the house and I'll check it out:)

Re: 1999 force 90hp gear linkage help!

I got it all back together it was hell lining the gear up in the case with the upper shaft it never would line up perfect but we finally got it and now it shifts fine .but I was kinda confused when you told me to pull up on the prop with it in forward gear I thought you were saying that the prop should turn to the left when in forward and that was confusing me .thaks
