Hello to all in HONDA Forums,

I am new to your side of the forums, but I am a regular on the Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury side. . I am now a proud owner of a 1999 Honda BF40. My Dad recently died and left me his Bennington Pontoon boat which I have taken care of for years. I pulled this boat from a fresh water lake in Kentucky all the way back to Florida where I live. The old motor probably has less than 50 hours on her. I changed the oil every year, and I changed the gear oil every year. I replaced the impeller a couple of years ago. Plugs have been changed several times as well. Filters have been changed several times.

My question? I have only owned 2 stroke motors. Is there something I need to look at with this motor on a maintenance issue? I hear about timing belts etc...which are high cost items on a 4 stroke. I would rather tackle it now while I have time to really go through the boat and motor.

By the way. The little motor runs very good. I want to keep her that way.

Re: 1999 Honda BF40 Question

Timing belts get old, but it looks easy to replace on that motor, I have the 50 horsepower version of the same motor. Most of the expense is in the labor so do it yourself and save a bunch. :). Check the valve clearances also. This is also easy, but you will want to use a new valve cover gasket and a good torque wrench. If the idle gets rough, syncing the carbs usually fixed it. Mine has been solid over the years, it should have a lot of life left in it.
