1999 J25ELEED Carb/Starter Issue

Love this forum - I've already learned a lot!

I just bought my first boat, with a 1999 25hp Johnson outboard. On my first run, I pinned it on the way in to check top speed, but when I pulled back to idle it cut out. At home, removed cover and tilted motor. Fuel leaked out of the carb so I figure stuck float / carb maintenance required.

To get to the carb, I had to remove the starter. When I loosened the 2 bolts on the bottom it came apart and four magnets (brushes?) in the bottom lost thier seating.

1) have I royally messed up?
2) Is there a trick to get those magnets to seat again?
3) Now that I have the carb off - any tricks that I should know for the carb overhaul? (Other than what I found in FAQs and carb kit literature.)

Thanks in advance - as you can tell I'm new to this and appreciate any help!

:)

You haven't screwed up royally, but you have caused yourself somewhat of a headache!

Piecing together the diagrams for your motor, it looks like you removed the bolts holding the starter together ... rather than removing the bolts holding the starter bracket and starter to the block!

As for getting the brushes and springs back into position so you can re-assemble the starter ... I'll have to leave that to someone else that's done it before.

Thanks,

I looked at the bracket holding the starter in place, but it looked hard to remove so I took the other path. I'll take another look and, if I can find one, grab a repair manual...

It has been awhile but I remember making a slotted tool out of a putty knife. Make the slot big enough to allow the starter shaft to fit. Reposition the brushes and hold them in place with your tool while sliding the bottom of the starter back on then just pull the tool out.

Figured it was something like that. I'm pretty sure I can use 2 strips of duct tape as well (just fold over the section that touches the brushes.

I got a repair manual today - hopefully that will help me avoid these; "lessons" going forward. I also hope it will help me to figure out removing the starter brace - I looked from the start but it seemed to be tough.

Thanks guys!

Just wanted to thank you guys for the help.
-Got it together last night and all runs well.

Word to the wise - new owners that plan on doing work themselves should buy a repair manual immediately.
Owners of this outboard SHOULD NOT remove the starter by the bottom bolts!

Glad to hear your "project" was a success! And the OMC factory manuals are definitely "heads above" any Seloc of Clymer manuals for most things.
