new here and bought my first boat 3 weeks ago, been reading alot of helpful things.

im going to jump on the fuel/oil ratio subject bandwaggon. i bought a 99 seaswirl. 1 owner, boat is in great shape. owner (older guy) said he never mixed oil w the gas. does it automatically. but, ive been told by other boaters and this forum seems..... to agree. to mix the gas and oil. i did do it once, the first time i took it out. had no problems. but havent done it since. in the Johnson book, it says if you run it hard, that you should mix 50:1. owner also said he replaces spark plugs every year.

thoughts?

thank you in advance.

Half of the guys on this forum will agree with the original owner and the other half will disagree. I, personally, disconnected the automatic oil injection and mix my own fuel/oil at 50:1, but, that doesn't mean that you should do it to. I'm a little old fashioned (with the emphasis on old) so it makes me feel more at ease knowing that the motor is getting what it needs. When the VRO system first came out, there were a few issues but, your motor is nearly new (to me) and the system is close to being fail proof. Lots of boaters use the system everyday and it's fine. Do yourself a favor and keep an eye on the oil usage so you will see the level dropping as it's used.
