Thanks to Dhadley I've resolved a show-stopping problem with my boat. Now on to a lesser, infrequent problem. I have Teleflex throttle assembly matched to the OceanPro 130. Once in a while when I put the boat in the water and warm up the engine I put it in reverse to back out (it's the only way) but the engines stays in neutral. I have to pump the throttle out of gear and back into gear, sometimes a few times, before it catches and I can continue on. Is this a problem with the throttle assembly or the motor? I have no idea how all this works out so any help, again, would be greatly appreciated. This board is the best!!!

Re: 1999 Johnson 130 OceanPro Gear shifting problem

First thing to do is disconnect the shift cable from the engine and see if the engine will shift into gear manually....with the engine running. If it shifts in OK, then there is a problem with the adjust ment, the controls or cables.

Are the cables the correct length for the rig? Are the controls the correct controls for the application?

With the shift cable disconnected, motor not running, shift the control in to gear while watching the shift cable end. Does it move back and forth?

Put the engine in neutral, the shift lever should be near straight up and down. With the controls in neutral, adjust the shift cable end trunnion to fit in the trunnion anchor block.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. When you say to disconnect the cable and see if the engine will shift manually, I take it to mean I need to work the mechanism on the engine itself that shifts the gears? I'm not all that familiar with the engine so any details you could provide would be appreciated.

As for the correct lengths, application, etc. the shifter is original equipment. I bought the boat new although it was 4 years old due to it being held by a court awaiting bankruptcy proceedeings of the dealer. So I'm sure it's the right shifter for the application and lenghts, etc. are correct. I was thinking the cable may have stretched.

I'll take a look at the things you recommend and post my results.

Thanks again!
