I've just completed my water pump replacment and had a question.

The reason for the replacement of the water pump was due to a trickle of water coming from the water outlet port, not a steady stream. The new water pump resolved that issue. It appeared someone had run the pump dry and had melted some plastic into the water pump oulet hole.

Before the replacment, when I started my engine, with water hose attached via a clam-shell style device, The outlet water stream wouldn't appear till about 20-40 seconds after the engine was running. I completed a full water pump replacment and I still have the same 20-40 second delay before water started to stream from the outlet.

I have already replaced my two thermostats before the water pump replacment, there is only one small hose coming from the top of one cyclinder to the outlet port. This outlet port has a 3-port inlet, one is capped off, one is from the hose atop of one cyclinder head and the other is a rather large tube which has a check-ball attached to the other end, but is not connected to anything else.

So, my question is, since there is only one hose going to the outlet port, the delay I am seeing should be normal since the engine temp has not opened the thermostats yet, correct?

Once the engine is up to temp (20-40 sec???), water flows very nicely.

I've had this motor out running a few times already before the water pump replacement and had not over-heated.

Any input, ideas or comments?

Thanks.
