I am having issues with the boat once i put it into gear. It will idle fine but as soon as I put it into gear and try to give it gas it will die. If I flutter the throttle (I have a Hot Foot) it will sometimes go. I checked all the fuel lines and the pickup in the tank and all seam to be ok. If I pump the ball good and hard it will be ok for a while and then I can't seem to keep it running. I am guessing it is a fuel pump issue but at $350 I really want to make sure. Is there anyway to test the pump and is there anything else I should be looking at.

Thanks.

start at the beginning of trouble shooting before spending $$$$. check you compression and spark with a spark tester. adjust tester to 7/16 inch. compression should be 100 psi or above, but must be within 10% of each other.

if all this is good, i would look into the carbs and a linc n sinc, before going to the fuel pump. it really sounds like you have contaminated carbs.

Carb kits, you can order them here on iBoats.
You need to do the tests first though.
It could be running on 5 cyl's.

Toby, The fuel system on that motor is non-trivial. You would benefit from a genuine Johnson Service manual. That motor has an OMS pump to mix oil with the gas, and a vapor seperator and pump to help the OMS pump get only liguid gasoline.

As the others said, idle and acceleration problems are likely clogged carbs, fuel supply is OMS or vapor seperator, air leaks, restricted filters etc. That motor has six carbs. A service manual is a must.

Most decent auto part stores sell spark tester with adjustable gao for $12 or less, you need a compression guage too $30 or less.
All plugs out for both tests, fully charged battery.

Do the tests per the TOP SECRET faq files.

It's covered in the FAQ thread. Here's the link, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=313963&highlight=compression but you should scan the thread entitled "top secret file", it is the FAQ for general diagnosis and maintenance and repair stuff. I have NO idea why they named this thread a cryptic name like that, why didn't they just call it FAQ so it's obvious to newbies.

That compression test thing is actually kind of confusing to non-mechanics, in my opinion. It doesn't explain why you should jump the starter instead of just cranking the engine with the key. That is because if the ignition is running, but the plug wires (remember all plugs are removed) aren't grounded, you can damage ingnition parts. Therefore you need to either ground all plug wires or crank the engine w/o the ignition firing. It also is not clear at all to someone with little experience exactly where you should connect the cables to jump it. (again, in my opinion).
