Hello -
I just got a new to me center console boat this spring, and it has a 1999 Johnson 225 J225PXEEN on it that has good compression and was running well. I replaced fuel lines only on the motor to the tank and the priming bulb (were dried out and cracked). The VRO is working and is hooked up to the oil tank as well. The motor started immediately, idled fine, and ran well but felt sluggish in the mid range and was tough to get on plane, but would eventually get there and top out around 40mph.
I had the rectifier go bad on it and had a voltage spike to 20+ volts while in a no wake zone (on the digital dash gauge) which caused my electronics to shut down for safety, and speakers to squelch and distort and then had erratic voltage. I replaced the rectifier and now voltage is stable at 12 volts. But while replacing I looked at the carbs to make sure all were linked correctly, and found that the bottom port side (looking forward) carb was not connected to the two above it and as such was closed at WOT. I tightened the screw, allowing all 6 to open and close together, and as a result the boat only accelerates to 8 mph now.
I just ordered a service manual and am waiting for it to arrive, but is it a safe assumption to think that the timing was adjusted in error by the previous owner that did not know the bottom carb was closed at WOT? Or does anyone think that the voltage surge may have caused issue to the Powerpack, coils, or stator?
Just beginning to dive into this problem so I haven't checked anything else at this time.
Thanks for any advice
