I'd pull the lower a part and see what it needs, may just need a pinion gear.

the splines where the driveshaft goes into the powerhead itself are stripped.

Ah, didn't read it right. What about changing the crank for a used one. What kind of $$$ are we talking about to purchase?

i'm not sure if the crack is stripped out as well but the lower unit driveshaft definitely is stripped.

I guess its a teardown and inspect, crank could be ok and just need a shaft.

yeah, if the drive shaft is damaged, the splines in the crank are going to be damaged also. unless you do the rebuild your self, the cost would be more than the motor is worth.

Re: 1999 Johnson 55hp lower unit

Is it one of the commercial motors or no? I've got a 2000 55hp commercial motor I bought from a place here locally, and they told me if I needed any parts to let them know, so I could inquire on prices if it's the commercial model. That's the ones they have that they use a lot, they make/sell the "pump jet" outboards out of them, and have a ton of spare parts.

assuming it needs nothing else, would 300 be a fair price for it? manual start / tiller configuration.
thank you guys.

Re: 1999 Johnson 55hp lower unit

Are you going to sell it now? If it has a perfectly good running powerhead, just may/may not need a crank, it's anybody's guess. That crank is the real concern, and will be for anyone looking at buying it. If the crank is perfect, then $300 is a good deal. If the crank it shot also, it's going to worthless except for parts, which most people aren't going to pay more than $100 for a partial parts motor. Do you have the lower unit still, just the driveshaft is messed up?

Ah, I didn't pick up on the fact that you were looking at buying it, sorry about that. Well like I said, if it's just the driveshaft, but the crank and lower unit are good, then $300 sounds good to me. I paid $2000 for mine back in 2005.

Re: 1999 Johnson 55hp lower unit

Faztbullet posted reman'd prices, totalling $540, but that's not counting the powerheard gasket set you will also need to tear down and rebuild the powerheard, and that's assuming nothing else is wrong with the engine. I'd offer him $100 for it and mention the amount of labor and parts required. I'd do some basic tests first, if you were interested in making an offer at all. Check LU for water intrusion, as well as do a compression check on it. If other parts are also shot, it's not worth the expense.
