1999 Johnson 9.9 pull start is not catching. I assume there is some kind of pawl or dogs that are supposed to come out when the rope is pulled, but, it isn't most of the time. The rope will just come out with only the retracting springs tension. If you pull it from 3 to 10 times, it will finally catch. It doesn't matter if you pull it out fast or slow. I've looked, but don't see anywhere to oil or grease it. It's more of an annoyance at this point, but, I'm afraid it's going to completely fail. The thing I hate is this little engine cold starts on the first pull, it's getting that first pull that has become the challenge. Anybody know the fix?

Yea, I don't know. I was thinking more like something needs oil. I've played around with it a little and after it does catch, if I just pull the rope too slow to start, then pull it again, and again it will continue to catch each time. Wait till I'm 15 miles out and need it for a kicker, and I'll have to pull it several times before it catches, lol.
