Does a 1999 Mercruiser 350 efi engine come with Vortec heads, if not would you recommend upgrading to them? Will these fit my engine? I have no compression in my number 5 cylinder and they are telling me i need a valve job. My engine has 185 compression in all cylinders except the number 5 cylinder that has 0. What can you recommend. i was quoted $1500 for the valve job and installation. Is this something I can do myself? What heads should i buy

Thanks:confused::confused:

I bet that price is for having the heads rebuilt. Around here, having a head rebuilt will cost you about $200 each. The $1500 is probably about $400 for the heads, $200 for gaskets, etc, and the rest for a day's labor at about $100/hr.

You're dead on. $95 p/hr for labor. I'm pretty handy. Built hi performance Volkswagen bug engines before. You think that removing and putting back the heads is an "expert" type of job above my skills or is it just a torque wrench and a tightening sequence.

In a boat, it's all about access, if you can get to it, you can do it.
