Hi,
I bought a used 1999 merc 4 hp 4 str and the the throttle lever on the carb is busted. It had been epoxied back together but is now in 3 pieces of black plastic. My problem is, its an integral part of the carb and I can't find a new or used carb. I wonder if it's worth it to try making the piece? Any ideas?

Re: 1999 mercury 4 hp 4 str

This might sound funny, but I have plastic welded lots of different things and I only ever watched a guy plastic weld a timing cover on one of my vehicles once, it's that easy. & it cost me $50.00

I use a soldering iron for nearly every thing ie for lighter plastics and a gas torch on one of the plumbers soldering irons (has a wooden handle with a rod and a square block on the other end that goes to a point and you heat that block) this I used mainly for welding a plastic water tank on my house. The best part is there is no cost other than your time.

Hope this is useful info

All you do is basically melt the two joins together. If you need more plastic ie because it is too thin or because you had to melt it in fairly deep to make a good join, then you need more plastic of the same grade. Plastics usually have a number on them to identify, or if you are unsure weld a piece together let sit for a bit then try to remove if it comes off easy then it's the wrong grade, if you can not remove it, then it is either the same or very close (good enough)

Hope that helps

Sand the affected areas well including where they join together get some PB Weld apply it let it sit for 24 hrs file sand to you liking and reinstall DONE Edit (Hint )your plastic may be very brittle. Use toothpics with rubber bands, wire, or tape to keep it all in line while drying this stuf is extreemly tuff and will reinforce your repair better than the original state of the item being repared, after dry cut file sand to remove unwanted surface and your good to go. Not realy sure about aheision to plastic but maybe you want to consider fibergalss repair
