I've had a 1999 Pro-line sportsman 202 with the original 99 Merc blue water series and it's worked quite well. Some folks have experienced compression problems but it's not been a problem for me. Like any outboard, though, you need to stay right on top of maintenance with these older motors and keep it sprayed down with lubricant after each use and if you go into saltwater, flush it afterwards. I'd recommend new thermostats, impeller, plugs and change all lubricants if you haven't done so.
It's been a strong motor for me and I've had no desire to switch it out. It sat for 2 years and I went out last week to start it and it fired right up. Again, maintenance is the key to keeping it strong and dependable.
