Okay to begin with i just bought a boat with a 1999 yamaha 90 2 stroke. When i start it in nuetral the prop spins forward. When i oush the control towards reverse it actually goes into nuetral.
I took the boat out yesterday fir a test ride and went to put into reverse and it would just rev up and make alot of clicking noise.
I took off the lower unit and it has the star type shift shaft. In nuetral when its hooked up to the motor it ratchets lightly in both directions. In forward it can turn clockwise but not ccw.
In reverse it barely catches and it wont move more than two inches each way.
How do i fix this? I believe it was installed wrong after previous owner replaced water pump. I cant seem to find nuetral when turning the shifter on the lower unit with pliers. When i do it still lightly clicks when soun in each direction. Is the lower unit in “no mans land” ?
secondly, the steering hook nuts are rusted badly. (The part that is connected to the steering arm via two muts and it hooks to the end of the steering linkage.) How should i go about replacing these? Will the studs still be there if i breaj the rusted nuts apart? Or will it have to be drilled out? Or how would you do it? Ill attach pics. Thanks.
