I'm looking a getting either a Honda 5hp or Honda 8hp "Classic" model with the square cowling as a trolling motor for a 19.5ft Bayliner open bow. The boat fully loaded weighs around 2600-2900 pounds. It will only be used in inland lakes

I have a 5 HP Honda on my 18' Grumman SF boat.
I'd say the boat with the 70' Rude comes in at @ #1200 er so.
The 5 HP will push her along top speed about 5-6 mph, 2 adults all our gear, fuel in tank, etc.
It'll troll all day at 2-3 mph.
This is on the St. Lawrence with or against the current.
I had a 22' Silverline Cuddy and a 9.9. HP, that boat went for @ #3600.
That 9.9 pushed that boat @ the same speed.
I've seem smaller outboards with those HUGE pushing props push heavy boats along................... I dunno how you figure out what size/pitch in those props, but they look cool!!
Just my 2 cents!
Joe
Always take any advice I give with a can of beer er 2!

I have a 20', 2000lb with a 9.9 merc pro-kicker. Pushes fine for trolling 1-4mph and about 8-9mph wide open. think I'm about at the displacement speed. Have a friend with the Honda 8hp high thrust, he does about the same. Both of us are very happy. The motors with the "high thrust" type of lower unit and large 4 blade pusher props work better than a standard small motor IMO.

No Title

My only concern with the 8hp is if my bracket/swim platform will hold the weight. I plan on removing the motor when the boat is not on the water so it's not bouncing around when on the road

I've had trolling motors on every boat I ever owned. Trolling is what we do. A 19 footer requires a 9.9. Personally I wouldn't be satisfied with an 8. You might get away with it for awhile, but one day it'll get windy and you'll know you needed more.

If the OB bracket in your picture was an add-on, then its likely that your platform isn't suitable for any OB. If it came from the factory like that, then you need to contact Bayliner to see what the weight / HP requirements are.

The bracket was a factory add-on on the larger Trophy boat's that also used the same platform. I contacted Bayliner and they said it would have been rated for a 9.9hp 2 stroke

The smaller motors are single cylinder models, while lighter, they tend vibrate a great deal, and are louder, so they can become very irritating to use for trolling.

If it's factory rated for a 9.9 2 strk the weight limit will be about 85#. For a comparison my evinrude 9.9 2 strk weighs 81#s my nissan 9.8 4 strk weighs 115# and that uses the same block as the 8 hp. Something to think about

A 2 strokes 9.9 & 15 HP weights same, usually same powerhead with detuned carb. If going for a 2 strokes Tohatsu can go as far as a 18 HP, all (3) 9.9, 15 6
