1st boat advice

I'm looking at purchasing my first boat. I've narrowed things down to a deckboat as that seems to give me a good balance for family and fun. I'm looking at less than 10 year old used deck boats. I've found two I'm fairly interested in.

2002 Glastron DX 215 Deckboat (190 hours)

or

1998 238 Crownline (287 hours)

Any preferences? Any advice on questions to ask the marinas who are brokering these boats?

Welcome aboard.

Personally, I like the layout of the Crownline better. Of course, this is subjective.

Prior maintenance plays a big part in this. You want to make sure all the systems are in good condition, hull disfigurations can be a sign of misuse, painted bottoms are a sign that the boat lived in the water which is harder on a boat, etc.
You might consider having a professional check them out.
Especially since you looking at dropping up to $20K.

I agree, I'm trying to get any maintenance records but that could be difficult. Both marina's say the boats are in great shape but that seems like listening to car dealer which I wouldn't. Any advice on finding an un-biased independent to review? The marina's are clearly biased as they'll make a commission on the sale. I like the Crownline better as well but 4 years and less hours on the motor are compelling arguments for me as well.

look for a Chris Craft 230 you will not beat it. 5.7 volvo penta. i have one.

I know what you mean about the sales people. I hate dealing with them - they're as trustworthy as politicians.
I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions how to go about finding a surveyor...never had the need for one. As the rest of the crew gets on later today, I'm sure you'll be inundated with suggestions...be patient.

I can tell you their services can go up to $600 with the average being around $300-350. I'm sure it depends on the size of the boat and what all they have to check.
Do any of the brokers offer any warranties of any kind? I've never purchased from a dealer - I assume there are no warranties on used boats.

Make sure the boat you are looking at has a winshield (as opposed to a windscreen, a small sined deflector mounted in front of the driver). A lot of deck boats of that vintage, were open and only had a minor windscreen for the driver. I think all boats today have a full walk through windshield.

Survey, survey, survey!

Do a google search on marine surveyors. There are a couple of certifying bodies that can lead you to someone local. Boat dealers and brokers are no better than used car dealers, and the stuff they don't tell you (or don't know themselves) could put you and your passengers at risk.

Please read my thread on buying a boat in winter. The surveyor saved me from making a big mistake.
