I have just acquired a 1970 starcraft starchief. it needs some work. Most import is the transom is rotted and needs replaced. once I get the moter of it and remoe all the screws will te old trasom lift out? this is mostly an aluminum boat. I hove other things it needs like new deck what is left of it iss delaminated plywood. I am concerned about the motor and the transom then rest I consider cosmetic. what is the best thing to replace the transom with? more wood or is there a better product?

Re: 1st boat project

Go over to the "Completed Boat projects" section and the first entry there is a completed, start to finish starcraft project. The "Boat Restoration and Building" section has many tips also.

But yes, replace the stuff with wood. Marine grade plywood

Ed welcome to iboats and the ever enlarging Starcraft club :D:D. Most of us doing Tinny's are using AC grade exterior Plywood sealed with resin and glass. You can go marine but it is alot more expensive. Bob are you keeping track of all these new Starcrafts and adding them to the list :D We really are taking over LOL.

Ya, 2 sheets of 3/4, you can seal it with a good sealer like Thompsons or similar, be sure to drill all your holes then pull it and reseal the holes you just drilled.

If your old transom isn't to rotted use it for a template.

It is crazy how many Starcrafts there are on here, the plant(used to be) about 15 minutes from my house.

Starcraft was sold to Smoker Craft several months ago and the had a huge sale of all the equipment they couldn't transfer to the New Paris site last week, so Starcraft, as it was, is gone.

I am sure Smoker will continue building them but even they filed chapter 11 several weeks ago, I certainly hope they make it, we don't need another boat company going down.

Back in the day within 30 minutes of my house we had Smoker Craft-Starcraft-Blue fin-Chris Craft-Suncruiser pontoons-Rinker-JC pontoons-Godfrey-Bennington-Harris Kayot-Sea-Nymph-Sylvan and I'm sure I forgot quite a few.
